Prosthodontics

Prosthodontics deals with the design, manufacture, and fitting of artificial replacements for teeth and other parts of the mouth. Some conditions and diseases addressed in prosthodontics include:

1. Edentulism: Complete loss of teeth in one or both jaws.

2. Partial Edentulism: Partial loss of teeth, often requiring partial dentures or bridges.

3. Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD):- Dysfunction of the jaw joint, affecting bite and jaw movement.

4. Malocclusion:-Misalignment of teeth, which can be corrected with orthodontic appliances or prosthetic devices.

5. Oral Cancer Reconstruction:- Prosthodontists may be involved in restoring oral function and appearance following surgical removal of cancerous tissue.

6. Maxillofacial Prosthetics:-This involves prosthetic reconstruction of the head and neck region, which can be necessary after trauma, surgery, or congenital conditions.

Prosthodontists work to restore and enhance oral function, appearance, and overall quality of life for patients with missing or damaged teeth.

Prosthodontic issues may not always present specific symptoms, but patients may experience:

1.Difficulty Chewing:-Trouble effectively biting and chewing food.

2.Speech Problems:- Certain prosthetic devices may affect speech initially.

3. Discomfort or Pain:- Especially when using new prosthetic appliances.

4. Changes in Bite:-Altered bite may occur with new prosthetic fittings.

5. Gum Irritation:- Prosthetic appliances, like dentures, may cause irritation or sore spots on the gums.

Regular follow-ups with a prosthodontist are important to address any discomfort, ensure proper fit, and make adjustments to enhance the overall function and comfort of prosthetic devices.
